Who are Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu?

Lord Vishnu is a supreme god. He is the “God of Preservation“. Lord Vishnu is the consort of Goddess Lakshmi. He along with Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma look after the world and its devotees. Lord Vishnu as a god of peace is against the “Ego”. He never blesses those who have an Ego.

The Cause of Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean)

One day, Indra dev ( the king of all gods) also called “Devraj”, was travelling somewhere on his elephant called Airavatha. In between, he met a sage. The Sage was the most powerful and wise. His name was Sage Durvasa.

Though Indra dev was a powerful god, It was believed that if Sage Durvasa curses someone then that curse could destroy one’s life!

So, Indradev saw Sage Durvasa and not greeted him properly. But, this did not bother Sage Durvasa.

Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi Love Story.

Sage Durvasa was carrying a garland in his hand. Though Indradev did not greet him properly, still the sage wanted to offer the garland to Indradev as a gift!

Sage Durvasa gave the garland to Indradev as a gift. The garland was made up of aromatic and beautiful flowers.

Indradev took the Garland and kept it on his elephant’s head. The elephant nodded its head and the garland fell.

Sage Durvasa seeing this attitude of Indradev got angry and cursed him. He cursed him that Indradev and his other gods will lose their powers and become weak.

Though Indradev requested and apologized a lot in front of Sage Durvasa, he didn’t listen to him!

Indra dev and other gods were in trouble!

Indradev told about this incident to his other gods. Everybody was shocked and the effect of the curse started!

All the gods including Indradev started feeling low and tired. Then suddenly, they saw that group of demons (Asuras) were coming towards the “Devlok”(God’s palace) to attack.

As the gods were weak and lost their powers due to curses. They weren’t able to defeat the demons! Lastly, Bali the king of demons won the war and crowned himself as the “Devraj” (King of Gods).

Indra dev and other gods went to Lord Brahma for a solution

After the defeat by “Asuras” (The Demons). All the gods along with Indra dev decided to go to Lord Brahma and discuss this problem with him.

Lord Brahma scolded Indra dev for his behaviour with Sage Durvasa and the effects because of it! Indra dev apologised to him and asked for a solution.

Lord Brahma was clueless! As he didn’t have the power to remove Sage Durvasa’s curse from all the gods and Indra dev.

So, he suggested everybody visit the God of preservation, Lord Vishnu for a solution to this huge problem.

Lord Vishnu’s advice for Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean)

Lord Vishnu was resting on his “Sheshnag”. He saw all the gods along with Lord Brahma with him.

Lord Vishnu very calmly asked about their problem. He after listening to all the issues, provided a strong solution to all!

Lord Vishnu said that the gods should do “Samudra Manthan“. In this process of churning the ocean, they will get “Amrita”.

“Amrita” is a nectar of immortality. Whosoever will take this nectar, will get power and never die.

So, Lord Vishnu said that all the gods should take this nectar and their power will return.

Indra dev doubted Lord Vishnu’s suggestion

Indra dev asked Lord Vishnu how they will do the Churning of the ocean. Lord Vishnu replied, ” All the gods should take Mountain Mandara and use it to churn the ocean.

Indra dev asked Lord Vishnu how they will do all this alone. So, Lord Vishnu suggested they take the help of Demons and if the demons ask for a share of nectar. Then Lord Vishnu will handle it!

He also suggested gods take the help of Vasuki, the king of snakes as a rope for the churning process.

Lord Vishnu took Kurma Avatar for the Samudra Manthan

Samudra Manthan was about to happen and there was a need for something to support the mountain for the churning process.

So, for this, Lord Vishnu has to take the form of a Tortoise (Kurma Avatar) and come down to earth. He took the form of a tortoise and the Manthan started.

Lord Vishnu suggested gods hold the tail of Vasuki and let the demons hold the head. As, Vasuki being a snake whenever pulled releases venom from his head.

The Venom could harm the demons and they will die. During the Samudra Manthan, firstly the “Amrita” was released. The second one was Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth).

Goddess Lakshmi was born due to Samudra Manthan

Goddess Lakshmi came out of the ocean which was being churned during the “Samudra Manthan”. When she came out, all the gods and demons got mesmerized and amazed by her beauty.

She is a goddess of wealth. She wore jewellery and beautiful attire. Everybody was so surprised to see her. Her beauty made them get distracted from the purpose all of them gathered there for!

Goddess Lakshmi chose Lord Vishnu as her Husband & got married

After the Manthan was ended. The god got back their power and became immortal. Now, everything was good among the gods. Suddenly, Goddess Lakshmi’s beauty became a topic among all the gods and demons.

Everybody was mesmerized looking at her at the time of Samudra Manthan. Demons even wanted to marry her too! But, Goddess Lakshmi was meant only for Lord Vishnu and indeed things went in that way!

Goddess Lakshmi’s wedding was decided by Lord Brahma and the “Swayamvar” was organised for her. All the gods, demons, sages and humans were invited to the marriage ceremony.

Demons were expecting that Goddess Lakshmi would choose one of them as her husband. Goddess Lakshmi heard about the Dark God, Lord Vishnu and was in love with him for a long!

It was all written by Lord Brahma. In the Swayamvar, Goddess Lakshmi garlanded Lord Vishnu and put the varmala on him.

Finally, they married each other and worshipped together forever!

Lord Vishnu & Goddess Lakshmi Had sons in their Avatars

All the gods do not have their own children after they got cursed by Goddess Parvati. She cursed them all because the gods disturbed Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva’s romantic moment after their marriage!

But, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu had kids when they took different Avatars for the preservation of the world. Goddess Lakshmi was blessed by a child when she worshipped Lord Shiva.

Then, she got a son and”Haehai Vansh”(Haehai Dynasty) was started. Like this, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi also got many sons named, Kardam, Prajabhoot, and Chikleet.

Later, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi adopted two other sons Prahalad and Dhruva. There are whole big stories based on their children!

It meant that Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi had 4 more sons according to Rishi Ved Vyasa. The four sons’ names were, Dritharashtra, Pandu, Vidura and Sukhadeva.
